Women's Tennis Routs Seventh-Ranked Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Baylor's tenth-ranked women's tennis team pulled off a mild upset Sunday afternoon in Coral Gables, Fla., as the Bears defeated No. 7 Miami, 4-1, to improve to 5-1. The Bears took an early advantage by winning the doubles point as the nation's 50th-ranked doubles team of Jana Bielikova and Karolina Filipiak made quick work of Michaela Kissell and Gina Sabatino, 8-2, before Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk clinched the point with an 8-4 dismissing of Bianca Eichkorn and Caren Seenauth. No. 18 Lenka Broosova put the Bears ahead 2-0 following a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Romy Farah. In the midst of inclement weather, Baylor finished off the Hurricanes with straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Stanivuk earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Seenauth at the No. 5 spot and 87th-ranked Filipiak provided the match-winning point with her 7-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 spot. "Miami has a very good team and they are exceptionally hard to beat at home," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "This was a good win for us." Miami earned their lone point at No. 1 singles as No. 29 Laura Vallverdu defeated No. 15 Zuzana Zemenova. The win concludes a school-record six-match road swing to open the 2008 season. Baylor will return to action as it hosts No. 36 TCU in its home-opener Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m. CST.
