Women's Tennis Opens Big 12 Play with Win at Iowa State
March 7, 2008 AMES, Iowa - The fourth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team opened Big 12 Conference action on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 win against Iowa State at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. With the win, the Lady Bears improved to 12-1 on the season, 1-0 in conference play. Baylor opened up by winning two of three matches in doubles play to take the early 1-0 lead. The 41st-ranked team of Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk opened with an 8-1 win at number-one doubles over Erin Karonis and Chrissy Derouin. Second-ranked Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova defeated Caitlin Loprinzi and Kara Hickey 8-4 at number-two doubles to clinch the doubles point for the Lady Bears. Iowa States' Liza Wischer and Reka Kelemen downed Zuzana Chmelerova and Natalie Holmes 8-6 at number-three doubles. Three matches went to a tiebreak in the first set, but the Lady Bears won each tiebreaker to take the advantage over the Cyclones. Baylor's top five players each won their first set. The Lady Bears took a 2-0 lead as 19th-ranked Ormond defeated Hickey 6-2, 6-2 at flight two singles. No. 123 Stanivuk won at number-four singles over Derouin by scores of 7-6 and 6-0 to stretch the Baylor lead to 3-0. Broosova clinched the match for the Lady Bears as the nation's eighth-ranked player won in straight sets 7-6, 6-0 over Karonis. The win marked Broosova's 13th-straight victory and gives her a perfect 13-0 record in spring action. No. 79 Jana Bielikova defeated Loprinzi 7-6, 6-3 at number three singles, and Zuzana Chmelerova downed Wischer 6-3, 6-2 to claim the win at number-five singles. Iowa State's lone point came at flight six singles as Kelemen defeated Holmes 7-5, 6-2.
Baylor continues its Big 12 road trip on Saturday as the Lady Bears travel to take on Nebraska on Saturday. Play from Lincoln, Neb. is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. |
