Women's Tennis Downs No. 31 Texas A&M, 5-2
April 2, 2008 WACO, Texas - Baylor won four straight singles matches and endured a 1 hour, 13 minutes rain delay as the fourth-ranked Lady Bears defeated No. 31 Texas A&M 5-2 on Wednesday night at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor improves to 20-2 overall this season, 6-0 in Big 12 action. The Lady Bears are now 15-2 against nationally-ranked opponents and have won 18 of their last 19 matches. In doubles action, Tiffany Clifford and Anna Blagodarova upset second-ranked Zuzana Zemenova and Lenka Broosova 8-5 on court one. In number two doubles, No. 57 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk battled to a 9-7 win over Christi Liles and Elze Potgieter. In the deciding doubles match, Jana Bielikova and Zuzana Chmelarova held an 8-7 lead, but Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank were able to hold serve to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreak, Texas A&M jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and were never challenged as they cruised to a 9-8 (1) win to secure the doubles point for the Aggies. No. 13 Broosova opened the scoring for Baylor with a straight-sets victory over Blagodarova 6-2, 6-0 on court three. Stanivuk put Baylor in the lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Clifford at number four singles. No. 28 Ormond gave Baylor the 3-1 lead on court two with a 6-4, 6-4 win versus Liles. Holding serve on match point, Zemenova double-faulted, making the score deuce at 3-6, 6-1, 5-2. Rain started falling and play was immediately stopped. After a rain delay and the mandatory 10-minute warm-up, Zemenova won two straight points to win the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Potgieter. Bielikova lost 3-6, 7-5, 3-6 on court five to Frank before Chmelarova defeated Davidson 7-6, 4-6, 10-5 in a third-set supertiebreaker more than five hours after the first serve of doubles play.
Baylor returns to action this weekend as the Lady Bears travel to face No. 70 Kansas on Saturday and Kansas State on Sunday. |
