July 1, 2008

Director of Athletics Matt Palm announced yesterday, June 30, that Anthony T. Gholson has been named the new men's basketball coach at Heidelberg College. He brings more than 15 years of experience in coaching, recruiting and program management.

Gholson is looking forward to continue to add to the recent success of the program in the coming years. "I am excited for the opportunity to lead a program that is growing and plays a large role in the campus community. As a whole, athletics at Heidelberg is a main stay in the campus culture and I look forward to becoming a part of it."

An assistant coach at Ohio Northern University the past four years, Gholson will make a return to head coaching when he arrives at Heidelberg. He served as head men's basketball coach at Columbus State Community College from 2000-04. During that time, he led his teams to an 86-36 record (.704 winning percentage). In the 2003-04 season, his team was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II with a 29-2 record. That same year, they won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Championship.

The Euclid, Ohio native lettered in basketball in 1987 and 1988 at Ohio Northern, and was a member of the National Tournament team in 1988. He was a member of the coaching staff when the Polar Bears won the national championship in 1993. He received his bachelor's degree from ONU and his MBA from Bowling Green State University.

In addition to his coaching success, Gholson has developed innovative weight training and conditioning programs and has led his student-athletes in community service projects. He also has experience in fund-raising.

"We're excited to bring on board someone of Anthony's caliber who has a proven track record as a coach and a commitment to winning," stated Palm. "With his leadership and experience, the Student Prince basketball program will continue to build on the momentum of its recent success."
