New York, N.Y. - The Wildcats indoor track & field team continued to blaze their way towards even greater heights over the weekend as they collected several Top 10 finishes at the nationally-renowned New Balance Invitational in New York, N.Y. On the men's side, freshman Ronnie Ashe collected yet another personal-best time in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.86 in the finals. That allowed the Raleigh, N.C. native to finish third overall in the event. "Ronnie continues to do the little things to get better each and every time out on the track," expressed second-year B-CU head coach Garfield Ellenwood. "We knew he was special when he came to us, but he has just surpassed our wildest dreams with his work ethic and determination to be the best." Junior transfer Joel Redhead, fresh off an NCAA Provisional Qualification last weekend at the Indiana Relays, collected another Top 10 finish in the 400 Meter Dash Championship finals with a time of 48.36. Redhead actually ran a faster time [47.63] in the preliminaries. In the field events, Harold Rose, Jr. continues to explore the skies as he finished third in the long jump with a mark of 7.40m (24-03.50). For Rose, this is his second Top 5 finish of the year in the long jump. For the women's side of things, Dianne Munroe registered a new personal-best time in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.51 seconds in the finals. That allowed Munroe--a native of Vryheid's Lust, E.C.D., Guyana and another in a long line of Essex County College products for the `Cats this year, to finish fifth overall in the consolation finals round.
The women's 4x200 meter relay squad consisting of Christina Roundtree, Tavia Burke, Quawandis Grubbs and Joy Henry, finished fifth overall with a time of 1:41.08 overall. Rockel Mitchell, needless to say an Essex County College product, collected a seventh place finish in the long jump finals with a distance of 6.02m (19-09.00). Mitchell, a native of St. Andrews, Grenada, has already earned an NCAA Provisional Qualification in the long jump, carries the best distance of the MEAC season into next weekend's conference championships. "I think we are just about where we need to be going into next weekend," praised Ellenwood. "The girls and guys are doing what the coaching staff is asking them to do, and we are excited to take them to the MEAC Championships this year where we hope they can perform the same way they have all year ... and hopefully even better." The next hurdle for the Wildcats, so to speak, will be next weekend at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Landover, Md. The event will take place at the Prince George Sports & Learning Complex. The Wildcats have not finished above eighth place in either men or women for the MEAC Indoor Championships in the last four years.
