Indianapolis, Ind. - Bethune-Cookman University head baseball coach Mervyl Melendez has been named as this week's Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Coach of the Week. Mervyl Melendez, head coach of the Bethune-Cookman baseball team, is this week's BCA's Coach of the Week. Melendez has led Bethune-Cookman to a 19-13 regular season record with a 6-0 record in the Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Mervyl Melendez has served as head coach for Bethune-Cookman for eight seasons, and is one of the most successful young college baseball coaches in the country. In 2007, Melendez earned both MEAC Coach of the Year and Black College Baseball Coach of the Year awards. One reason for Melendez's coaching success is his commitment to diversity and inclusion. Melendez's has been noted in the May 2000 USA Today for his efforts in recruiting diverse student-athletes to play baseball at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Melendez joins the ranks of other notable coaches like legendary women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer (Rutgers University) and John Thompson III (Georgetown) who have also received this award this year.
