Tucson, Ariz. - First baseman Osvaldo Torres has been named this week's Louisville Slugger's News National Player of the Week as released on Monday afternoon by Collegiate Baseball News from Tucson, Ariz. Osvaldo Torres, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound first baseman/outfielder from Cidra, Puerto Rico, transferred into the Wildcats program last year from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He has immediately become a great first baseman and has picked up his numbers substantially throughout the last month of play. On the week, Torres led the Wildcats in batting and fielding as he went 7-for-13 at the plate with seven runs and batting in nine RBI. The Wildcats went 3-2 on the week while claiming their third consecutive outright Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference [MEAC] regular season title with a series sweep of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Daytona Beach, Fla. Torres also had a batting average of .538 last week while collecting a slugging percentage of 1.615 as he belted four homeruns to up his number to eight (8) on the campaign. Not to mention he had two doubles and two sacrifice fly balls. In the field, Torres had 28 putouts from his first base position with zero (0) errors. This is Torres' first national weekly honor this year. B-CU has, however, collected numerous Black College Baseball honors in both player and pitcher forms this season. Torres is also a candidate for Black College Baseball Player of the Week this week as well ... an honor he has never been nominated for. Other's receiving awards this week in the nation were Alex Silverman (RHP) of Brown University, as well as Stephen Strasburg (RHP) of San Diego State for Louisville Slugger's Pitchers of the Week.
