Joe Jakubowski Named MAC Player of Week
March 3, 2008
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University freshman Joe Jakubowski has been named a Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning (March 3). Jakubowski earns the honor for the first time in his collegiate career. Jakubowski, a native of Rossford, Ohio (Toledo St. John's H.S.), set a number of career standards as the Falcons downed nationally-ranked Kent State, 89-83, Saturday afternoon (March 1), in the team's lone game of the week. The point guard set a career scoring high for the second-straight game, with 21 points vs. the Golden Flashes, and also set a career standard with 12 assists. The double-double was the first of Jakubowski's collegiate career. Jakubowski also set career bests in field goals made (7) and attempted (13) in the game, and tied his previous mark for free throws made, with five. His assist total nearly doubled his previous high of seven. Jakubowski's previous career scoring high had come in the Falcons' previous game, as the freshman had 17 points in a win at Detroit on Feb. 23. On the season, Jakubowski is averaging 7.7 points and 3.1 assists per game. His assist average leads the Falcons, and he leads all MAC freshmen in both assists and assist-turnover ratio (1.33). Jakubowski is averaging 8.0 points and 3.1 assists in MAC games. Jakubowski shared the MAC's Player-of-the-Week honor for the East Division with Michael Bramos of Miami. Western Michigan's David Kool took weekly honors in the West Division. Jakubowski is the second Falcon to earn the honor this season. Redshirt freshman Chris Knight was the MAC P-O-W on Nov. 12 after a stellar season-opening weekend in his hometown of Cincinnati.
The Falcons, after the win over #23/24 KSU, are 13-14 overall and 7-7 in MAC play. BGSU heads to Buffalo for a Tuesday (March 4) game, before closing the regular season with Sunday's (March 9) contest at Miami.
