Wiemer Named Scholar Athlete of the Week

April 11, 2008

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Haley Wiemer of the softball Falcons was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week as announced by the league's head office today, April 11. Wiemer shares the award with Kent State's Jamie Fitzpatrick and is the second consecutive Bowling Green State University female student-athlete to win in as many weeks.

Last week, Wiemer (pitcher, Jr., 4.00, adolescent/young adult/ secondary education, Sylvania, Ohio) recorded two multiple hit games as the Falcons went 3-1 on the weekend in MAC play, with Wiemer recording all three wins. To open the weekend, the junior pitcher downed a previously unbeaten Miami team, 8-3, while picking up her first multiple-hit game. She and the Falcons split that series in Oxford, but went on to outscore Ball State 11-4 to close the weekend. On Saturday, Wiemer not only blanked the Cards, 3-0, from the hill, but also went 2-for-3 from the plate while driving in two RBI. For the weekend, Wiemer batted a .333 with a double and three RBI's while slugging a .417. When facing batters, she struck out 14 in 18.1 innings. Wiemer also recorded a 2.29 ERA.

As a Falcon, the Sylvania, Ohio native has earned the award three times.

Fitzpatrick (first base, Sr., 3.909, education, Cartersville, Ga.) hit .600 (6-for-10) ended last week with two homers, a double, a walk and six RBI. In KSU's 4-3 win at Akron, Fitzpatrick blasted a two-out, three run homer in the fifth inning. The next day, she hit a two-out home run during the sixth-inning of Kent State's 3-0 win at Ohio. Over the last two weeks, Fitzpatrick is hitting .400 with four HRs. She is Kent State's career home run leader with 32.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
