Big Ten Announces Softball Players of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK Alessandra Giampaolo, Michigan Giampaolo extended her hitting streak to a career-best 15 straight games with a 7-for-19 performance over Michigan's six-game week. The Pasadena, Calif., native belted out her first (vs. Central Michigan) and second (at Minnesota) home runs of the season and boasted a two-double performance against Bowling Green. The Wolverine captain contributed to all three runs in the nightcap at Minnesota, scoring the game winner on a Gopher error in the first inning before adding a sacrifice fly and leadoff home run. For the week, Giampaolo hit a .846 clip and had four RBI. This is her first career weekly honor. Last Michigan Player of the Week: Samantha Findley (2/25/08)
Nikki Nemitz, Michigan Nemitz recorded three wins over the Wolverines' weekend series at Wisconsin and Minnesota. The St. Clair Shores, Mich., native allowed just one earned run and seven hits through 13 innings pitched over the weekend. She struck out a career-best 15 batters in the first game vs. the Badgers and returned just an hour later to strike out four more in three relief innings. On Sunday, she tallied her eighth complete-game shutout of the season with a 12-strikeout two-hitter vs. the Golden Gophers. This is the second weekly honor of her career. Last Michigan Pitcher of the Week: Nikki Nemitz (3/24/07) Brittany Weil, Iowa Weil threw 29.1 innings last week, finishing with a 3-1 record and a 0.72 ERA with 36 strikeouts. Weil tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout while striking out nine in Iowa's upset win over Northwestern. She allowed no earned runs on just two hits. After the first inning, Weil retired 17 of the next 19 batters, allowing just a single in the fourth and a walk in the sixth. She also struck out three of the final five batters to secure the win. Weil started the weekend by tying her season-high in strikeouts with 11 against Michigan State on Friday night. The Garden Grove, Calif., native threw her 16th complete game of the season against the Spartans and walked only one batter. Weil tossed 3.2 innings in relief on Saturday to pick up her 17th win of the season. This is the third career accolade for Weil.
