IRVING, Texas -- Neil Medchill (Oklahoma State) and Travis Starling (Texas A&M) have been tabbed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games of April 14-20 in voting by a media panel. Both student-athletes are being honored for the first time.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Neil Medchill, Oklahoma State, LF/DH, So., Oxford, Mich./Chandler-Gilbert CC
Medchill led the Cowboys to a 4-1 week, which included OSU becoming the first team to sweep at Texas in 12 years. He produced a team-high .524 batting average along with a double, a triple, two home runs and six RBI. At the plate, the Oxford, Mich. native was 11-for-24, scoring six runs and recording a .952 slugging percentage.
In the Texas series, Medchill was 6-for-13 with a double, a homer and three RBI. He was 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in the series clinching game on Saturday. In Sunday's finale, the sophomore went 2-for-4 while extending his career-long hitting streak to seven games.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Travis Starling, Texas A&M, RHP, So., Yoakum, Texas/Yoakum
Starling picked up a win and a save to guide the No. 8 Aggies to their first Big 12 sweep of Baylor. He entered in the ninth inning on Friday night to protect a 2-1 lead, retiring the Bears' 4-5-6 hitters en route to posting his eighth save of the season. On Sunday in Waco, Starling threw a career-high four innings and earned the 13-12, 11-inning victory over BU. He completed a stretch during the ninth and 10th innings where he retired six of seven, setting the stage for Texas A&M's game-winning hit in the 11th.
