Katrina Relief Urban Plunge

Jan. 28, 2008

BOSTON - On Friday, March 7, a group of Boston University student-athletes will make the trip to New Orleans, La., as a part of the Katrina Relief Urban Plunge. While in New Orleans for 10 days, they will help rebuild homes that were devastated by the 2005 hurricane.

Interested student-athletes can contact Mallory Doyle at mdoyle@bu.edu or sign up at http://intervarsityne.org/krup/. The cost of the Katrina Relief Urban Plunge is $350 per person, which includes transportation, housing and meals in New Orleans, as well as supplies. Deadline to register is Feb. 1. See the website for more information about the trip.

The trip is made possible through InterVarsity (IV) Christian Fellowship, an interdenominational campus ministry across the United States. InterVarsity has arranged the trip over the last two spring breaks since Hurricane Katrina hit, and different schools from around the country have gone to New Orleans to help with the rebuilding process.

Tours of the city accompany the community service that will take place, and most evenings will involve discussions on what was accomplished during the day and the societal issues that participants will face in New Orleans such as poverty, class, race, service, and what can be done.

The InterVarsity-Athlete Chapter was started at BU by women's soccer players Mallory Doyle and Meredith Beaton. They lead bi-weekly meetings, where they provide volunteer opportunities to BU student-athletes. Only student-athletes will be able to represent BU on the trip.
