Terriers Host Hartford in Last Regular-Season Home Game Thursday
Feb. 26, 2008 Game Notes | Gametracker | Listen Live BOSTON - The Boston University men's basketball team hopes to continue its momentum when the Terriers (12-15, 8-6 America East) host Hartford on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. BU has won seven of its last eight games and is in a four-way tie for third place in the league, while the Hawks (15-14, 9-5 AE) stand alone in second place. Boston University holds a 35-17 all-time lead in the series and has won 10 of the last 12 meetings. The Terriers are dominant at home, 19-4, and have won the last five consecutive games in Boston. The last time BU lost to Hartford at home was Jan. 29, 2002, a 44-42 decision. In the teams' first meeting this season, Hartford claimed a 66-57 win. Sophomore guard Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) netted 16 points in the second half en route to a game-high 20 points and freshman John Holland (Bronx, N.Y.) posted his first career double-double of 11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. The Terriers committed 23 turnovers, made just 2-of-27 (7.4 pct.) from the 3-point line and went scoreless for 5:16 at the beginning of the second half. BU's woes from deep were a leading cause for the Terriers' troubles on offense since their 3-point attempts accounted for nearly half of their total field goal attempts. Hartford had a five-game win streak snapped by a 94-82 loss at Vermont on Feb. 20. The Hawks have struggled on the road, going 4-11 for the season. Joe Zeglinski leads the way for UH with 16.2 ppg. Warren McLendon (12.2 ppg) and Morgan Sabia (10.6 ppg) are the other two Hawks in double figures. Michael Turner is UH's leading rebounder, averaging 5.7 boards per game. Lowe and Holland have each stepped up for BU as the conference season winds down. Lowe leads the team with 18.1 ppg. He is ranked ninth in the nation in made 3-pointers per game (3.8) and leads BU in assists. Holland, a five-time America East Rookie of the Week, received his fourth straight such honor after shooting 59.3 percent from the floor and averaging 20.5 ppg with nine steals in two games last week. He, along with sophomore guard Carlos Strong (Portland, Maine) average 10.6 ppg, and sophomore forward Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ont.) is the fourth Terrier in double figures with 10.1 ppg and a team-best 6.2 rpg.
In the 67-64 win at St. Peter's last Saturday, Lowe led BU with 22 points. Holland added 18 points and seven rebounds, and Brittain contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. BU came out flat in both halves and had trouble defending the three, but the Terriers came up with the offense when it mattered, sinking a wide-open two-foot layup with 13 seconds left when they were down one and making two free throws with four seconds left to hold onto the win. The Terriers round out the regular season at Albany on March 2 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised in New York on TW-3. |
