Eruzione Olympic Goal Named SportsCenter's Greatest Highlight

Eruzione's goal broke a 3-3 tie to lift Team USA to a win over the Soviets in the semifinal round.

March 4, 2008

Former Boston University hockey standout Mike Eruzione's game-winning "Miracle on Ice" goal in the 1980 Winter Olympics was recently named the greatest highlight ever by ESPN's SportsCenter. The goal, which led Team USA to an improbable upset over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, beat out Boise State's Statue of Liberty play in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl in the final match-up.

In all, 16 highlights were selected for the bracket-style competition. In the first round, Eruzione's goal topped Lynn Swann's acrobatic catch in Super Bowl X. The quarterfinals had the goal matched up with Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit World Series home run in 1988, while it had to beat out another Pittsburgh Steelers' highlight - The Immaculate Reception - in the semifinals.

The Eruzione goal, as well as all of the other highlights that were considered, can be viewed here.
