Women's Swimming and Diving Finishes Second at AE Championships; Men Take Second

ORONO, Maine - The Boston University women's swimming and diving team placed second at the 2008 America East Swimming and Diving Championships on Sunday evening in Orono, Maine. The Terriers held the top spot during the first three days of competition, but were overcome by UMBC on the final day. The men's squad finished second behind four-time defending AE champions UMBC. Law student Eric Carlson broke the school mark in the 200 breaststroke, marking the second time in two days he set a program record, while the women's 400-free relay team claimed first place.

The entire coaching staff, led by head coach Bill Smyth, earned the conference's Coaching Staff of the Year honors, while junior Eve Kinsella was named the Top Women's Swimmer. Divers Tess Waresmith and Andre Watson were honored as the top divers.

In the 200 back, freshman Sarah Doersam finished third in a time of two minutes, 6.55 seconds. Doersam later earned another third-place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.77. Junior Eve Kinsella capped off an impressive four-day stretch with another second-place finish in the 100 free (51.92).

Sophomore Brigette O'Shaughnessy, freshman Kirsten Tullis and freshman Clara Van Allen went 3-4-5 in the 200 breaststroke. The 400-free relay team of O'Shaughnessy, freshman Maria McIntyre, sophomore Emily Munday and Kinsella swam to victory with a time of 3:29.54.

 

 

On the men's side, sophomores Tyson Slesnick and Ben Kaiser placed second and third in the 1650 free with times of 15:52.93 and 16:04.26, respectively. In the 200 back, freshman Bryon Kallert touched the wall in 1:52.49.

Sophomore Arik Seiler was the second to complete the 100 free (46.19). One day after setting a school record in the 100 breaststroke, law student Eric Carlson picked up second place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:05.43, setting his second school of the weekend.
