Terriers Fall to Albany, 76-50; Raffo Surpasses 1,000 Career Points

ALBANY, N.Y. - Senior Cheri Raffo hit three treys to surpass 1,000 career points and classmate Kasey Devine posted 12 points, however, the Boston University women's basketball team fell to Albany, 76-50, on Wednesday afternoon at SEFCU Arena. BU falls to 12-9 overall and 5-3 in America East action, while the Great Danes improve to 7-14 overall and 6-2 in league play. The Terriers shot 31.7 percent (19-for-60) in the game and were 5-for-18 from behind the arc. Devine led the way with 12 points and five rebounds, while Raffo posted nine points - all from behind the arc. Raffo's 3-pointer at 7:21 put her into the 1,000-point club, and she now has 1,004. Junior Christine Kinneary led with a game-high eight assists and classmate Amarachi Umez-Eronini earned a game-high four steals. Albany out-rebounded BU, 47-24, however, the Terriers held the Great Danes to five steals, after they had been averaging over 11.35 steals per game. BU and Albany battled back and forth through the first five minutes of the contest as the two squads traded leads four times within that span of time. After remaining within three points of each other for the first 10 minutes of the frame, Albany converted on three straight possessions to jump out to a 14-7 lead at 10:46. The Terriers quickly cut the deficit on a layup by sophomore Aly Hinton and a long trey from junior Kristi Dini, and on the next possession, Dini grabbed the lead for BU with a jumper in the paint. The Great Danes went on a 9-2 spurt to get the lead back and open up a 23-17 advantage. Albany stretched the lead to the largest of the half - 12 points - when it closed on an 11-3 run.
At the break, Hinton led the Terriers with six points on 3-for-6 shooting, while the team shot 27.6 percent from the field. Albany hit 55.6 percent of its shot attempts and out-rebounded BU, 22-14. To start the second half, Umez-Eronini scored the Terriers' first six points, however, Albany had a response as three different Great Danes scored baskets to maintain the 12-point advantage, 40-28. Albany opened up a 20-point lead, 56-36, backed by its depth on offense as seven different Great Danes scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half. At 4:26, Albany opened a 22-point lead with a jumper by Gia Sanders and it finished with the largest of the game - 26 points - with a layup with seven seconds on the clock to round out the scoring at 76-50. BU will travel to league-leading Hartford on Saturday, Feb. 9 for a 2:00 p.m. game, which will be streamed live on America East Zone at AmericaEast.com. |
