Terriers Take on Albany Wednesday
Feb. 5, 2008 BOSTON - Riding a three-game win streak, the Boston University women's basketball team will travel to Albany on Wednesday for a noon tip-off. BU enters tomorrow's contest with a 12-8 overall record and 5-2 America East mark, while Albany is 6-14 overall and 4-3 in league action. The Terriers lead the all-time series, 11-2, and have won four consecutive games over the Great Danes. Prior to its four consecutive wins over the Great Danes, Albany picked up its only two victories of the series on Jan. 29, 2006, and March 2, 2005. The rivalry began on Jan. 18, 2000 with a 68-55 Terrier win and was followed by seven consecutive BU wins. The largest margin of victory in the history of the series came on Jan. 9, 2003 in a Terrier victory, 87-56. Despite struggling in the non-conference portion of its schedule - going 2-11 - Albany has picked up conference wins over UNH, Maine, Binghamton and more recently Stony Brook. In the win over the Seawolves, Tanika Thrower scored a season-high 19 points as four Great Danes posted double figures. Also reaching double digits was Kristin Higy (15 points), Sherri Mikus (12 points) and Britney McGee (12 points). Higy and McGee pace the Great Danes' offense with 11.1 ppg and 10.4 ppg, respectively, while Gia Sanders is the team's leading rebounder with 6.7 rpg. Albany is the league leader in steals per game with 11.35 - ranking 23rd in the nation. The Terriers now rank eighth nationally in free throw percentage (.780), seventh in turnovers per game (13.7) and 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.14). Junior Christine Kinneary is fifth in the country in assists per game (7.2) and sixth in assist/turnover ratio (2.47). Following her impressive week, AE's Co-Player of the Week Aly Hinton leaped to 23rd in the national ranks in free throw percentage (.867). Against UMBC and Vermont, Hinton was 14-for-16, including a 7-for-7 performance against the Catamounts.
Junior Jesyka Burks-Wiley paces three Terriers in double figures with 14.7 ppg. Hinton and senior Cheri Raffo have averaged 10.1 ppg, respectively. Kinneary has already dished out 143 assists this season, which is the fifth-best single-season total in school history. She now has 309 handouts for her career - seventh all-time. Raffo is just five points away from reaching the 1,000-point plateau. The New Jersey native has also started every game the Terriers have played over the last four years - 111 appearances - and if she gets the nod in each contest this season, she would finish her career as the only Terrier to accomplish the feat. In the Terriers' most recent victory, Raffo poured in a career-high 27 points, as BU claimed an 83-73 triumph over Vermont (14-6, 5-2 AE) on Saturday at Case Gym. With the win, the Terriers snapped the Catamounts' four-game win streak and moved into second place in the America East standings. Following Wednesday's game, BU will take on league-leading Hartford on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2:00 p.m. in West Hartford, Conn. |
