CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Backed by a sweep in the 200 breaststroke and nine first-place finishes, the Boston University women's swimming and diving team edged cross-town rival Boston College, 151-149, on Tuesday evening at the Flynn Complex Pool. Juniors Christina Ruggiero and Tess Waresmith earned two wins apiece in the victory, while freshman Kirsten Tullis and sophomore Liisa Young swam season bests in the 200 breaststroke and 500 freestyle, respectively.

The Terriers began the meet on a winning note, as the 200-medley relay team of freshman Sarah Doersam, Tullis, sophomore Emily Munday and freshman Maria McIntyre out-raced the competition with a 1:52.54 finish.

Ruggiero opened her meet with a convincing win the 1000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in ten minutes, 28.32 seconds - nearly 24 seconds faster than her closest competitor. Her second victory of the evening came in the 500 free (5:10.80). Young gave the Terriers the 1-2 finish in that event, with her season-best performance in the race (5:15.16). Ruggiero later changed focus to the sprints, where she earned what proved to be a crucial point in the 100 back.

Waresmith remained undefeated on both the one- and three-meter boards with scores of 306.30 and 275.55, respectively. Junior Alex Crerar placed second in both events with a score of 256.65 on the one-meter and 261.00 on the three-meter.

In the sweep of the 200 breaststroke, Tullis swam a season-best 2:27.23, followed by sophomore Brigette O'Shaughnessy (2:28.03) and freshman Clara Van Allen (2:29.16). Van Allen was also victorious against the Eagles, as she won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.05.

Other crucial wins came from junior Eve Kinsella in the 200 IM (2:10.92) and freshman Maria McIntyre in the 50 free (25.40).

The Terriers will now turn their focus to the America East Swimming and Diving Championship, which will be hosted by Maine from Feb. 14-17.
