Women Take Fourth at New England Championship; Men Tie for 19th


Senior Tahari James set a new track and meet record in the triple jump

BOSTON - The Boston University women's track and field finished fourth at the New England Championship this weekend at the Track and Tennis Center, while the men's side tied for 19th out of 33 teams. Seniors Tahari James and Marisa Ryan set school records in the triple jump and 3000m, respectively, also earning bids to nationals.

Connecticut won the women's championship with 155 points, followed by Northeastern (80.50), Rhode Island (63.50) and Boston University (63).

Ryan's record setting 9:15.63 time in the 3000m earned her a provisional qualification for nationals that was so close to the automatic qualification time that she is almost guaranteed a spot. Freshman Laura Martin placed 13th in the 200m with a 25.80 time and sophomore Casey Jordan (57.72, 8), junior Rebecca Marshburn (58.74, 15) and freshman Amanda Howard (1:00.01, 23) all crossed in the 400m. Freshman Emma Reed took 11th with a 5:06.20 time in the mile, while junior Katie Weider (2:14.29) took second and graduate student Kat Warden (2:16.17) placed seventh in the 800m. Senior Anne Wighton took third in the 1000m with a 2:53.68 time, while Marshburn (8:57) earned the 14th spot in the 55m hurdles.

 

 

James's 13.30m triple jump set a new track and meet record, earning her an automatic bid to nationals, with sophomore Whitney Ford ranked third with a 12.77m jump.The Terriers had four athletes in the top ten in the long jump, with James's 5.80m mark setting the pace, junior Alexis Beaudet coming in third with a 5.49m jump, and junior Edwina Clark (5.30m) and senior Alyssa Fanucci (5.25m) taking ninth and 10th, respectively. Sophomore Mimi Maritz placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.45m.

On the men's side, Connecticut took the title with 168 points, with Rhode Island (72), Southern Connecticut State (71) and Sacred Heart (50) all trailing. The Terriers earned eight points, tying Holy Cross, Bentley and UMass Dartmouth.

Sophomore Jan Bicanic placed seventh in the shot put with a 15.51m throw, with senior Dan Martin (14.79m, 10) and freshman Dan Withrow (14.50m, 13) also ranking. Sophomore Mac-Alen Gerard came in seventh in the triple jump with a 13.86m distance.

Sophomore Eric Ashe took sixth with a 4:10.99 mile and senior Patrick Hoye (4:11.83) placed eight, while sophomore Mark Mazzochette came in 15th in the 500m with a 1:06.34 time. Freshman James Weider earned the 11th spot in the 1000m, running it in 2:35.16.

Next weekend, the Terriers will have representatives competing at the IC4A Championship at the Track and Tennis Center and at the ECAC Championship.
