Bucknell Women's Rowing Completes Busy Weekend with Strong Showing on Occoquan

April 6, 2008

FAIRFAX, Va. (Occoquan Reservoir) - The Bucknell women's rowing team faced Dayton, Georgetown, George Washington and MIT on Sunday and won 12 of 13 races. The teams rowed against each other both in the morning and again in the afternoon on the Occoquan Reservoir with the opponents different during each session.

The Bison varsity eight was impressive as it posted a 25-second victory over Georgetown in the morning session and then came back to defeat MIT by nearly 30 seconds in the afternoon. The second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four, novice eight and novice four also posted two wins on the day.

Eleven of Bucknell's 12 victories were by at least 10 seconds with the closest race coming when the Bison second varsity eight defeated Georgetown's varsity lightweight eight by nearly 5.5 seconds.

"This format provided us with a great opportunity to race twice in one day against a number of different opponents," commented Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "Our thanks go out to George Mason for hosting the event.

"Our team is progressing well following this weekend's events, and we are looking forward to a very strong competition next week at Ohio State."

After a busy weekend, which also featured Bucknell's first home race of the season Saturday morning against Buffalo, the Bison will travel to Columbus, Ohio, and the Griggs Reservoir to face Michigan, Ohio State and Tennessee Saturday, April 12. Ohio State and Tennessee both finished in the top-10 at last spring's NCAA Championships, while Michigan claimed third in the championship eight at the 2007 Head of the Charles.
