Butler Falls At SIU, 9-2

March 10, 2008

Box Score

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois took advantage of some wildness by the Butler pitching staff and defensive miscues in the field to go ahead early before holding on for a 9-2 decision at Abe Martin Field on Monday (March 10) afternoon.

A pair of walks, a wild pitch, a hit batsman and a fielding error helped the Salukis to a pair of two-out runs in the first inning before a four-hit second inning doubled the scoring to put SIU ahead 4-0.

After working through some early troubles, Butler starting pitcher Bryan Bokowy settled in to work a hitless third and fourth inning.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs offense attempted to get back into the contest. Ryan Neat led off the fifth with a bunt single before Alex Montagano followed with a single to right to put runners on first and second with no one out.

The threat would end there, however, as a strikeout and double-play quickly erased the scoring opportunity.

The Salukis added a run in the sixth before getting a two-out, three-run home run in the seventh to put SIU in front 8-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the eighth, as Rick Betsch followed a one out single by Joe Pauley with an RBI double to the gap in right center before moving to third on a ground-out. Kyle McLaughlin brought Betsch home with a single to center, but Butler would get no more.

The Bulldogs return to Indianapolis on Tuesday (March 11) when they host Taylor in the home opener beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Bulldog Park.
