Wright State Trumps Bulldogs In Series Opener, 17-9

April 11, 2008

Box Score

Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler rallied from an early six-run deficit to close to within two, but a consistent Wright State offensive onslaught kept the Bulldogs at bay, as the Raiders picked up a 17-9 decision in the series opener on Friday (April 11) afternoon at Bulldog Park.

Wright State spotted itself to a 6-0 lead thanks to a four-run first and two-run second, but Butler responded with a four-spot in the fourth to cut the difference to two. After the first two batters reached base to start the inning, back-to-back doubles by Ryan Neat and Grant Fillipitch drove home three runs before a sacrifice fly by Jason Jamerson plated the fourth.

The Raiders earned two of the runs back in the top of the fifth, but a bases-loaded RBI single by Neat and a sac fly by Fillipitch brought across two more for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the frame to bring the scoring to 8-6.

A four-spot in the top of the sixth followed by another four-run inning in the eighth by WSU proved to be too much to overcome, however, despite a spirited rally attempt by Butler in the ninth.

Trailing 17-7, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one down for Fillipitch, who again delivered in the clutch with a two-run single to right, but a pop out and a strike out ended the threat.

Fillipitch finished the night with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with a team-high five RBI and a run scored, while Neat added two hits and two RBI. Kyle McLaughlin chipped in three hits, while Alex Montagano posted a pair of hits and three runs scored.

Butler returns to action on Saturday (April 12) when it hosts the Raiders in a double-header beginning at 12:00 noon at Bulldog Park.
