Late Singles Wins Push Butler Past Sycamores, 4-3

March 28, 2008

Results

Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler rallied for wins in the bottom three singles spots, including a match-clinching victory at No. 6 by senior Sam Brown, to post its seventh-straight dual meet win with a tough-fought 4-3 decision over Indiana State on Friday (March 28) at the Butler Bubble.

The Bulldogs found themselves trailing, 3-2, in the bout with the final two singles matches to play before freshman Brandon Bayliss scored a clutch 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 to bring the contest even at 3-3.

After cruising to a 6-0 win in the first set at No. 6, Brown had to fight to the bitter end of the second and deciding frame, topping the Sycamores' Blake Douglas 7-6 (7-2) to seal the win.

Butler took an early advantage in the match, scoring wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the first point. Eric Breitenbach and Chris Herron posted a strong 8-3 win at No. 1 before Ben Raynauld and Bryce Warren scored an 8-5 decision to nail down a 1-0 lead.

ISU would come back in singles play, however, scoring two-set margins in the top three singles positions to take a 3-1 lead in the match.

Warren kept the Bulldogs alive at No. 4, posting a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision to pull Butler to within one point heading into the final two bouts.

Butler returns to action on Saturday (March 29) when it travels to Toledo for a 2:30 p.m. contest against the Rockets.
