UIC Slips Past Butler, 1-0

March 30, 2008

Box Score

Junior Sarah Clynes pitched her second shutout in as many days and visiting UIC slipped past Butler, 1-0, in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series at the Butler Softball Field on Sunday (March 30). The win lifted UIC to 11-21 on the year and 2-1 in league play, while Butler fell to 11-13 overall and 2-3 in league action.

Clynes, who tossed a three-hitter to defeat Butler, 4-0, on Saturday (March 29), stopped the Bulldogs on just two hits. She had six strikeouts and no walks in the complete-game performance. The win lifted the righthanded pitcher to 7-11 on the season.

The game was scoreless through three innings, as Clynes and Butler starter Jennifer Chasteen locked in a pitchers' duel. The Flames finally broke through in the fourth inning with a single run off of Butler relief pitcher Nikki Naffziger.

Shortstop Brooke Frydendall opened the UIC fourth with a double to left field, and she advanced to third base on a passed ball. With one out, sophomore Brittany Dixon delivered a single up the middle to plate Frydendall with the game's lone run.

Butler had runners reach second base in the third, fifth and seventh innings. But Clynes stopped the scoring opportunities each time, once with a ground out and twice with strikeouts,

Junior Lindsay Schluge had both Butler hits in the game. She doubled with two outs in the second inning and then recorded a one-out single in the fifth.

Butler will step out of league play to host IPFW in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1. The first game of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
