Bulldogs Fall Short In Title Match, 4-3

April 27, 2008

Results

Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler went toe-to-toe with top-seeded UIC, battling back from an early 2-0 deficit to bring the match even at 3-3, but the Bulldogs would fall short in the deciding bout in falling, 4-3, in the Horizon League Championship on Sunday (April 27) at North Central High School.

The match mirrored the 2007 championship dual between the Bulldogs and Flames, as the two squads split the first six points of the competition before UIC claimed the winner at No. 2 singles.

After coming up short in the doubles competition, Butler used its bottom half of the singles lineup to bring it back into the bout.

UIC took a 2-0 lead in the match with a win at No. 3 singles, but the Bulldogs earned wins at No. 4 and No. 6 to even the scoring. Becky Jenkins tallied the team's first point at No. 4, topping Grace Gill-Morlis 6-4, 6-1 before Michelle Hawes added a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Jenna Reisch at No. 6.

The Flames countered with a two-set decision at No. 1, but Tiffany McLoughlin answered at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Amy Jellish.

Butler would get no closer, however, as UIC nailed down the clincher at No. 2.

The Bulldogs finish the season with a 13-9 overall record.
