May 2, 2008
DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU Head Coach Matt Doherty announced that Paul McCoy has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Mustangs beginning with the 2008-09 season. McCoy is listed by Scout.com as the tenth-rated point guard in the class of 2008 and is a Rivals.com three-star prospect. He was a two-time first-team all-state selection in Oregon while leading Grant High School in Portland to the 6A (large-class) stat title. McCoy averaged 16.5 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals as a senior. "Paul McCoy is a player we targeted one year ago as a guard we really wanted in our program," says Doherty. "He is a tough and talented young man that will help us reach our goal of being a top-25 program. His recruitment took many turns. Many big name schools became involved, but in the end he saw a tremendous opportunity to help lead SMU Basketball back to greatness. We are thrilled that he finally ended up a Mustang!" McCoy (5-11, 175) was also a first-team all-state selection in football as a defensive back and is the first player in ten years to earn All-State honors in both sports in class 6A in Oregon. He was a wide receiver and defensive back on Grant's football team, which is the same high school that produced current SMU football head coach June Jones. McCoy also runs track and was a member of the 2007 state championship 4x100 meter relay team. McCoy finished his high school career with 1,508 points. He also averaged 17.9 points, five rebounds, and four assists as a junior. His sophomore campaign saw him average 14.6 points, four rebounds, and four assists. McCoy also made the 4A state finals in the triple jump (third) and long jump (fifth) as a sophomore.
