Cal Varsity 8 Ranked No. 1 in USRowing/CRCA Coaches Poll

BERKELEY - California earned the No. 1 ranking in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. Previously ranked No. 9, Cal earned 11 first-place votes and 465 total points in the poll that was released today after defeating three ranked opponents last weekend at the Pac-10 Challenge. Yale has 13 first-place votes but just 458 points to earn the No. 2 ranking.

In the Golden Bears' 2008 season-opening regatta, the Cal varsity eight defeated then-No. 2 Virginia, then-No. 5 Ohio State and No. 14 Notre Dame at the Pac-10 Challenge March 29-30 in Redwood Shores, Calif. This week, Virginia fell to No. 3, Ohio State dropped to No. 9 and Notre Dame stayed put at No. 14.

The Pac-10 has a total of six varsity eight boats in the current rankings, including No. 4 USC (400 points), No. 6 Stanford (334), No. 15 Washington State (132), No. 17 Washington (78) and No. 18 UCLA (75).

Cal next competes against Texas in Austin, Texas, on April 12.
