Arizona State Slips Past California, 4-2

May 9, 2008

Box Score

Tempe, Ariz. - California could not hold a 2-0 lead, as the second-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils rallied for a 4-2 win over the 23rd-ranked Golden Bears on Friday night at Farrington Stadium.

Cal drops to 40-23 on the season and 7-13 in Pac-10 play. The Bears wrap up the regular season tomorrow against ASU at 12 p.m.

Marissa Drewrey suffered the loss to fall to 26-15 this season. She was responsible for all four runs, while allowing eight hits with five strikeouts. She tied Jocelyn Forest and Michele Granger for third in most games started in a season (41) and tied Granger with the third most appearances (48) in a season.

Cal's offense got off to a productive start in the top of the first inning as Erika Racklin and Gina Leomiti notched back-to-back one-out singles. Two batters later, Katie Vickers delivered a double down the right field line on a 1-2 pitch to plate Racklin from second base, giving the Bears the 1-0 lead.

The Bears remained aggressive in the second inning thanks to Julie Meyer's single through the left side on a 3-2 count to score Vernae Sevilla, who led off with a double, to take a 2-0 lead.

ASU began to chip away at Cal's lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning when Caylyn Crabb notched an infield single to score Kristen Miller.

The Sun Devils then took the lead for good (3-2) in the bottom of the fifth inning after Kaitlin Cochran's two-run home run off of Drewrey. ASU scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 4-2 lead.

Katie Burkhart earned the victory after relieving starter Megan Elliott in the second inning. She allowed one hit and struck out nine over six innings.
