Coughlin, Hardy Qualify for Beijing in 100 Free at U.S. Olympic Trials

Fellow former Bear Silver must wait for 100-free berth, Adrian reaches men's 50-free final

OMAHA, Neb. - California alumna Natalie Coughlin qualified for her third individual Olympic event when she placed second in the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 53.83 on Friday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at the Qwest Center. Former Golden Bear Jessica Hardy posted a 54.62 to place fourth and also qualify for the 100 free at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. Emily Silver, who completed her Cal career this past season, finished fifth in the 100 free in 54.91 and must wait until later in the week to see if she has earned an Olympic berth in the U.S. 4x100 free relay. In order to fill out its 4x100-free relay at the Olympics, the U.S. team automatically takes the top four swimmers in the 100 free and could take the fifth- and sixth-place finishers as well.

Coughlin is also qualified to swim in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley as well as in the 4x100-free relay later this summer in Beijing.

On the men's side on Friday, Cal swimmer Nathan Adrian qualified for the 50-free final with the seventh-fastest time (22.03) in the semifinals. The men's 50-free final is scheduled for Saturday.

On Friday morning, Cal swimmer Lauren Rogers finished 19th with a time of 2:14.12 in the women's 200 backstroke heats and did not advance to the semifinal round.
