Carson-Newman Hammers Out 15 Hits In Win Over Augusta State, 9-4

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Senior Nick Achberger went 4-for-4 with two triples and a home run as Carson-Newman opened its 2008 season with a 9-4 win over Augusta State on Friday afternoon.

Achberger, who moved from third base to left field for his senior season, hit a two-run shot to left in the fifth inning to deliver the deciding blow. He finished with three RBIS and three runs scored to lead the Eagles offense.

Sophomore Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) had three hits and an RBI batting behind Achberger. His double helped set up a two-run sixth inning for C-N.

Freshman Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.), who replaced Achberger at third, had a pair of hits and scored once in his first collegiate game.

Carson-Newman (1-0) pounded out 15 hits in the win.

Sophomore Michael Elliott (Chattanooga, Tenn.) struck out eight in pitching four innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save.

Senior Brett Hontz (Newton Square, Penn.) picked up the win for the Eagles. Hontz worked five innings, surrendering eight hits, and four earned runs.

Carson-Newman will face Augusta State twice on Saturday. First pitch is at noon.
