Eagles Sweep Crusaders



Corey Lamson's big day sparked the Eagles to a two-game sweep over North Greenville.

TIGERVILLE, SC -- Carson-Newman swept the home opener for the North Greenville University Crusaders Tuesday afternoon at Ashmore Field. The Eagles won the first game 5-3 and the second 14-0. For the season North Greenville falls to 1-3, while Carson-Newman improves to 5-1.

GAME ONE: Carson-Newman 5 North Greenville 3

Carson-Newman struck first, scoring in both the first two innings against North Greenville starter Daniel Goodnight. Langdon Potts led off the game by reaching on an error by shortstop Cory Hinton and later on scored on an error. In the second inning Corey Lamson hit a bases loaded double, driving in two runs and staking Eagles starter Michael Elliot to a 3-0 lead.

Down 4-0 in the fourth, the Crusaders offense came alive under the bats of Cory Hinton, Curt Marshall and Grant Kelley. With Hinton and Marshall on base, Kelley doubled to left field, driving in both, but was stranded without scoring another run.

The Crusaders added one more run in the fifth as Chad Drosieko scored on a bunt by Chase Pope.

The Eagles put the game away in the top of the seventh with an insurance run as a pickoff throw got away from the Crusaders fielders.

Nick Acheberger led the Eagles with two doubles and two RBI.

Curt Marshall and Cory Hinton led the Crusaders with two hits apiece.

GAME TWO: CARSON-NEWMAN 14 NORTH GREENVILLE 0

Carson-Newman struck early and repeatedly as they jumped out to a 14-run lead and coasted the rest of the way behind starter Jacob Lambert. Lambert went five innings, giving up one hit and striking out seven. Matthew Benjamin picked up the loss for the Crusaders.

The Eagles bats were hot the first inning as they managed five runs on four hits. They added another run in the second, two in the third, and six in the fourth.

 

 

Cory Lamson led the way for the Eagles, going 4-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Langdon Potts scored twice and also added an RBI.

The Eagles return to action this weekend with a three-game series at USC-Aiken.
