C-N Explodes Against Milligan

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles pounded out 11 hits and three home runs to beat Milligan 14-5 at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex Thursday afternoon.

Senior Langdon Potts (Dandridge, Tenn.) led the Eagles with three hits, coming up a double shy of the cycle. He also walked once and scored four runs.

Milligan jumped out quickly, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top if the first.

Dallas Crouch singled to lead-off the game. Justin Motte and Baker Decamp were each hit by a pitch from C-N starter Charlie Hill to load the bases with no outs, but Milligan could only manage a pair of sacrifices for its early lead.

WIth one swing, Carson-Newman (14-5) grabbed both runs back in the bottom half of the inning.

Senior Nick Achberger (Anderson, S.C.) belted a two-out, two-run home run over to left-center to knot the game 2-2. The blast scored Cory Lamson (Gray, Tenn.), who walked earlier in the inning.

The Eagles answered a Milligan run in the top of second with a quick one of their own in the third.

Senior Langdon Potts (Dandridge, Tenn.) ripped a line drive off the scoreboard in right for his first home run of the season. He would finish the day 3-for-4.

Leading 6-5, the Eagles put up a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Potts singled to start the barrage. Freshman Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.) would reach on an error, opening the flood gates. Lamson and Wesley Dozier (Cornelious, N.C.) each added RBI-singles in the inning.

C-N added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Eagles bench started to do the damage.

Senior Kaleb Goforth's (Morristown, Tenn.) pinch-hit home run highlighted C-N's four-run eight inning to blow the game open. Goforth, who hit for Dozier, hit a towering shot to center to score the Eagles final two runs of the game.

 

 

Achberger finished the day 2-for-3 with a four RBIs, including a two-run double to right-center to plate the first two runs in the eighth.

Michael Elliott (WP, 2-0) worked only a scoreless third of an inning to grab his second win. Six Eagles combined on the win, none working more than two innings.

Carson-Newman returns to conference play on Saturday when it faces Mars Hill in a three-game series. The Eagles, 3-3 in the South Atlantic Conference, will host the Lions in a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. Sunday's lone game will begin at 1 p.m.
