C-N Pounds Out 18 Hits in 15-10 Win

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles pounded out 18 hits to beat Mars Hill 15-10 on Sunday afternoon at in Jefferson City.

With the win, Carson-Newman (16-6, 6-3 SAC) sweeps the weekend series and has won 8-of-9 games. The two teams combined for 37 hits, but only eight for extra bases, all doubles.

Mars Hill jumped out quickly, plating two in the top of the first.

First baseman Danny Miller's (Gaithersburg, Md.) RBI-single scored Devin Presnell (Boone, N.C.), who had reach after being hit by a pitch from Eagle starter Wes McIntyre (Chattanooga, Tenn.).

The Lions added to their early lead when shortstop Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) tried to double up Miller at first. His throw sailed wide of first baseman Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.), allowing Mars Hill's Corry DiBiase (Orlando, Fla.) score.

The Eagles took the lead in the second, taking advantage of two walks and hit batsmen, to move ahead 6-2.

Rogers, Langdon Potts (Dandridge, Tenn.), and Wes Dozier (Cornelious, N.C.) all came up with two-RBI hits in the inning.

Rogers' single to left with the bases loaded scored senior Nick Achberger (Anderson, S.C.) and junior Tyler Wynn to knot the game at 2-2. Potts would later rip a line-drive single off the wall in right, scoring two more to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. Dozier's double to the gap in right-center scored Potts and catcher Jonathan McMahon (Charlotte, N.C.), stretching C-N's lead to four.

Carson-Newman would post another six spot in the fourth.

Achberger and Wynn each singled to start the inning. Senior Jason Gray (Rutledge, Tenn.) would double to left-center with the bases loaded to deal the big blow, as the Eagles stretched their lead to 14-4.

 

 

Mars Hill battled back to make things interesting in the ninth.

The Lions put up five runs in their final turn at the plate to cut the Eagle lead to 15-10. Freshman Dustin Dalton (Blaine, Tenn.) came in to get the final three outs and complete the sweep.

Senior Cory McGinnis (Morristown, Tenn.) had one of his best games of the season, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Gray added three hits and a team-high four RBIs.

Sophomore Michael Elliott (WP, 3-0) picked up the win for the Eagles, working three shutout innings in relief.

Starter Carl Taylor (LP, 2-2) took the loss for the Lions, allowing six runs.

Miller had four hits for the Lions. Second baseman Brian Williams (Orlando, Fla.) added three, including two doubles.

C-N returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Pfeiffer at 2:30 p.m. Mars Hill will host Anderson (S.C.) on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
