Wingate falls to 17-28 overall and 7-10 in the conference. Game #1: Carson-Newman 6 Wingate 0 Carson-Newman senior outfielder Nick Achberger (Anderson, S.C.) drove in three runs while senior right hander Brett Hontz (Newton Square, Pa.) tossed a three-hit shutout for the Eagles. Junior infielder Aaron Knowles (Hope Town, Bahamas) had two hits for the Bulldogs. The first three innings of the game were played Friday night; with Carson-Newman taking a 4-0 lead before rain halted the game. The Eagles got their first run in the second inning on an RBI single from senior first baseman Cory McGinnis (Morristown, Tenn.). Carson-Newman added to the lead in the third, getting a bases-loaded three-run triple from Achberger to make it 4-0. Carson-Newman added to the lead in the eighth inning when Achberger scored on an RBI double from sophomore infielder Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.). Long would then score on an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) to make it 6-0. Hontz went the distance, striking out 11 while not walking a batter to improve to 8-1 on the year. Sophomore right-hander Dusty White (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two in three innings of work. Freshman right-hander Cameron Falcon (Durham, N.C.) pitched all six innings on Sunday, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out two.
Game #2: Carson-Newman 1 Wingate 0 Sophomore outfielder Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) was two-for-three with an RBI for the Eagles while junior left-hander Jacob Lambert (Kettle River, Minn.) allowed only three hits in 6.2 innings to pick up the win for the Eagles. Three different Bulldogs had a hit in game two. The game would go scoreless through the first three innings, with Carson-Newman collecting three hits and Wingate getting one. The Eagles got on the board in the fourth, when Long reached on a bunt single with one out. He then went to second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI double from Lamson. That would be enough for Lambert, who allowed only two hits through his first six innings of work. The Bulldogs threatened in the seventh, getting a two-out single from freshman catcher Matt Crump (Matthews, N.C.), followed by freshman outfielder Cale Rogers (Snow Camp, N.C.) reaching on a walk. Junior right-hander Corbin Arial (Elgin, S.C.) came in to get the last out, striking out the only batter he faced to pick up his fourth save of the year. Lambert struck out four while walking two in 6.2 innings of work, improving to 3-0 on the year. Wingate sophomore right-hander Tyler Almond (Oakboro, N.C.) took the tough loss for the Bulldogs, allowing one unearned run on eight hits while striking out two in 6.2 innings.
