TAMPA, Fla. - The fifth-seeded Carson-Newman Eagles will continue their stay in the NCAA Division II South Regional as they eliminated their second opponent in as many days Saturday night, this time with a 9-3 upset of rival Tusculum at the University of Tampa Baseball Stadium.

As a result of their win, the Eagles (43-17) were scheduled to play a second consecutive game this evening against another South Atlantic Conference foe, No. 3 seed Catawba. The Indians suffered their first lost of the tournament earlier today as they fell to top seed Tampa, 12-7.

Carson-Newman road a strong outing from starter Corbin Arial (Elgin, S.C.) to victory over Tusculum (41-15), a team the Eagles fell to 8-7 in Thursday's opening round. Arial, who earned the save in yesterday's win over Stillman College, tossed four scoreless innings before loading the bases with one out in fifth.

Lefty Michael Elliot (Chattanooga, Tenn.) came on in relief and gave up a sacrifice fly to Carlos Rivera (Leesburg, Va.) before working out of the jam. Elliot pitched the next two and 1/3 innings en route to earn the win and improved to 4-0 on the year.

Carson-Newman got on the board in the first against Pioneer starter Eric Donahue (New Market, N.H.). Second baseman Langdon Potts (Dandridge, Tenn.) led off the bottom half with a double and, after Jason Gray (Rutledge, Tenn.) laid down a sacrifice bunt, scored on long fly ball to center field from Derek Long (Dandridge, Tenn.).

Tyler Wynn (LaGrange, Ga.) continued to come up big for the Eagles as he connected on a two-run homer to put Carson-Newman up 3-1 in the sixth. The Eagles took advantage of two errors by the Pioneer outfield later in the inning, enabling them to add three more runs, coming on hits from Gray and catcher Jonathan McMahon (Charlotte, N.C).

The two teams traded runs in the seventh. Carson-Newman's came when Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) singled and scored on a wild pitch. Run-scoring hits from Long and Nick Achberger (Anderson, S.C.) in the eighth gave the Eagles a commanding 9-2 advantage.

Pioneer catcher Christian Rosa (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) hit a solo shot with one out in the ninth, but the Pioneers could get no closer.
