JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles finished seventh at the AASU/Southbridge Pirate Invitational played at Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah, Georgia over the weekend. The Eagles shot 304-297 for a 601, finishing 20 shots back of winner Clayton State. C-N was just 11 shots back from third-place Coker, and bounced back with a solid second day after a slow start. "Not bad for our first tournament of the spring," C-N head Coach John Minor said. "We made some mistakes on the first day that put us in a deep hole, but we were very solid on the second day." Freshman Blake Howard was Carson-Newman's top finisher, firing 74-72 for a two-day 146, nine strokes back, good for ninth overall. Sophomore Cory Hinchey finished at 149, posting a two-day 74-75. "Blake played well," said Minor. "He's a freshman. This is his first top ten. I'm pleased with the way he and Cory (Hinchey) played." Freshman John Minor, Jr. finished 25th, firing a 78-74 for a two-day 152. His 78 on the first day, and tournament total, was inflated by a quadruple-bogey in the 16th, weighing down an otherwise solid weekend. Sophomore Brad Robinson finished 34th at 154, while senior T.C. Baker's 147 found him in a tie for 41st. Carson-Newman returns to action on Monday in the 17th Annual Richard Rendleman Invitational. The two day event is played at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, North Carolina.
