Jan. 31, 2008 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles dropped their third one-point game of the season Wednesday night, falling to Catawba 59-58 in Holt Fieldhouse. Sara Crane's layup off an inbounds with 6.2 seconds remaining and an Ashley Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) driving miss at the buzzer were the deciding plays in a back-and-fourth South Atlantic Conference battle. The Indians answered a driving layup by C-N's Angela Volentine with 27 seconds left to pick up the win. C-N (10-9, 4-3 SAC) jumped out early, taking a 10-6 lead on a three-point play by junior Lindsey Eggleston (Buena Vista, Colo.). Eggleston had 10 points and six rebounds in the first half. Catawba (9-10, 2-5 SAC) answered with an impressive 13-2 run to take a 19-12 lead just past the midway point of the first half. The Indians stretched the lead to ten at 27-17 on a three by Sicilia LoSauro (Oviedo, Fla.). LoSauro finished with 11 points on 3-of-6 from behind the arc. The Lady Eagles would close the margin to 29-26 on a layup by Eggleston late in the half. C-N seized some control out of the gates in the second half. Trailing 31-27 at the break, the Lady Eagles used a 10-4 to take an early 37-25 second half lead. LoSauro hit her third three to give Catawba the lead back at 38-37. C-N got a bucket from senior Emily Mason (Rogersville, Ala.) to take a one-point lead with 1:14 seconds to play. The Indians answered with a pair of NeKethia Howard (Macon, Ga.) free throws to take the lead back at 55-54, setting up the game's final sequence. Carson-Newman was its own worst enemy when it came to the small things, especially free throws. The Lady Eagles hit just 9-of-22 free throws in the loss. Sophomore Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) led C-N with 13 points and eight rebounds. Mason and Eggleston each finished with 10.
The Lady Eagles have now dropped five games this season by a total of eight points. Cameron Clark (Albemarle, N.C.) and Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, Md.) each had 12 in the win for Catawba. Clark hit 4-of-6 from three-point range. Carson-Newman travels to Newberry on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip with the Lady Indians. Catawba is back in action at Wingate on February 6. |
