Lady Eagles Too Balanced For Newberry, 72-58

NEWBERRY - S.C. - The Newberry Lady Indians fell to Carson-Newman College 72-58. The Lady Indians fall to 14-6 and 4-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. Carson-Newman moves ahead of Newberry in the standing while improving to 11-9 and 5-3 in the SAC.

The two teams battled it out for the first five minutes by trading buckets. Carson-Newman held the slight advantage at 7-6 before going on 10-0 run to take an 11 point lead. Three Newberry turnovers prevent the Lady Indians from attempting a shot during the run.

After Tosha Goodman (Winter Park, Fla) converted a lay-up to break the scoreless streak for Newberry, the Lady Eagles responded by stretching the lead to 16 points at 24-8. The Lady Indians showed resiliency and cut the half time lead to nine points at 33-24.

With the scoreboard reading 39-28 and 16:12 on the clock, the Newberry offense went to work. Courtesy of a 10-0 run, the Lady Indians cut the lead to one point at 39-38. Newberry was able to grab the lead twice; the last time at 45-44 with 10:13 to play. From there, Carson-Newman went on a 17-2 run making the score 61-47 and taking control of the game. With just over four minutes to play, the 14 point deficit was too large for Newberry to overcome. Carson-Newman ultimately claimed the win at 72-58.

Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) had a game high 16 points. Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) earned her tenth double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Carson-Newman had four players in double digits led by Lindsey Eggleston with 16 points. Ashley Kyle had 13 points while Tykira McDaniel added 12 points. Ashley Tipton had 10 points for the Lady Eagles.

 

 

Both teams will play Mars Hill in their next game. Newberry will travel to the North Carolina school on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tip off.
