Feb. 10, 2008 GAFFNEY, S.C. - Senior Zoe Heim (Gallatin, Tenn.) tossed a three-hit shutout, and freshman Emily Hutchins (Hixon, Tenn.) hit her first career home run as Carson-Newman (4-0) beat Limestone College twice on Sunday, 6-0 and 3-0. Game 1 Sophomore Stephanie Templeton (WP, 2-0) worked five shutout innings and nursed an early lead to help the Lady Eagles grab Game 1. The Ringgold, Georgia-native scattered five hits and struck out five, as she won for the second time. Sophomore Jessie Howard scored in C-N's first at-bats, giving Templeton all the runs she would need. She singled to lead off the game, later scoring on a Limestone error. Junior Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, Ga.) singled to lead off the second. Hutchins followed her, banging her first career home run to give C-N a 3-0 lead. Howard wrapped up the scoring in the three-run third, scoring a double by senior Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, Tenn.). Hutchins finished with three hits and 3 RBIs. Game 2 Heim, a transfer from Ohio University, struck out 11 and allowed only three hits to win for the second time in two days. Howard and Palmer each had a pair of hits to lead the Lady Eagles offense. Freshman Leah Price reached on an error to start the third. Howard followed with a single to move Price to third. Howard would steal second to give the Lady Eagles runners at second and third with nobody out. Sophomore Brianne Coon and Hickam each followed with sacrifice bunts to score both runners, giving the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Carson-Newman is back at home on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles will host a doubleheader with Columbus State beginning at 1 p.m. |
