March 22, 2008 SALISBURY, NC -- Carson-Nemman swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Eagles won by the scores of 6-0 and 6-3 to improve to 28-4 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 16-17 and 0-4. Zoe Heim (Gallatin, TN) shutout the Lady Indians in the opener and improved to 17-3. She allowed just two hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts. Most of the offense came on two-run homers by Elisha Collins (Rutledge, TN) and Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, TN). The teams were scoreless through three innings until Collins homered with one out in the fourth. Stevens hit a two-run homer with two outs in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-0, which was more than enough for Heim. Carson-Newman picked up an unearned run in the first inning of game two on a sacrifice fly by Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, NC) and it would be Hickam that added to the lead with a three-run homer in the fourth. C-N got two out singles from Jessie Howard (Knoxville, TN) and Jessie Kuhlman (Portage, MI) in the fourth to extend the advantage to 6-0. Stephanie Templeton (Ringgold, GA) took a no-hitter into the fourth, but Catawba would get one-singles from Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) and a two-out double from Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) to cut the deficit to 6-2. Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) cut the margin to 6-3 with a two-double in the fifth, but Heim entered and retired seven of the final eight batters to earn the save.
Hickam had a hit in each game for Carson-Newman with four RBI in the nightcap. Stevens, Kuhlman, Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, GA) and Whitney Kee (Knoxville, TN) each had three hits in the doubleheader. Markham had three his for Catawba in the two games, while Marshall had a hit in each contest. MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) had two hits for the Lady Indians in game two. |
