JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -Carson-Newman shutout Lander twice on Sunday in Jefferson City as C-N head coach Vickee Kazee Hollifield won her 800th career game. Carson-Newman (32-6) allowed just three hits on the day to beat the Bearcats 9-0 and 3-0. Hollifeld, in her 23rd season at C-N, in now 800-247 all-time as head coach. She is currently in the top 15 in the all-time in NCAA Division II coaching victories and winning percentage. Game 1 Starter Zoe Heim (Gallatin, Tenn.) fired a two-hit, five-inning shutout and Carson-Newman took advantage of five walks, and four hit batsmen to win game one 9-0 over Lander in five innings. Heim (WP, 19-5) allowed two hits, one an infield single, and struck out seven for her 19th win. She took a no-hitter into the fourth, before allowing a single to Lander's Carson-Newman struck first, scoring twice in the first. Shortstop Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.), after drawing a lead-off walk, scored on Jessie Kuhlman's (Portage, Mich.) triple to right-center. The Lady Eagles added their second run of the inning a perfectly executed "suicide" squeeze. Kuhlman came charging home on the offering by Lander starter Austin Murray (Boiling Springs, S.C.), senior Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, Tenn.) laid the bunt down in play to easily score Kuhlman, and put C-N up 2-0. C-N put the game out of reach with a seven-run fourth inning. Stevens two-RBI triple off the wall in right highlighted an inning that saw Carson-Newman draw two walks and get hit by pitches on three separate occasions. Junior Elisha Collins (Rutledge, Tenn.) had two hits in the inning, including a double to left-center.
Game 2 Lady Eagles starter Stephanie Templeton tossed a one-hit shutout as Carson-Newman notched Hollifield's 800th, beating Lander 3-0. Templeton's only blemish was a fourth-inning single by Lander's Haley Foster. The Ringgold, Georgia native worked all seven innings, striking out six and walking one in moving to 12-1 on the year. Howard had two hits and an RBI for the Lady Eagles. Stevens added an RBI double in the third to plate Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, Tenn.) for C-N's first run. Freshman Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) solo home run in the fourth was the key blow in the game, giving C-N a 2-0 lead and Templeton a two-run lead. Kee wrapped an offering from Lander starter Jenna Kellet around the foul pole down the line in left for her second home run of the season. Carson-Newman returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday when it faces Tusculum in Greeneville, Tennessee. |
