Unlikely Item Helps Purdue Shatter Auction Record
May 15, 2012
CARLSBAD, Calif. - No. 14 Purdue baseball will host Indiana State for the final homestand at Lambert Field on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012, but the stadium's legacy will live on through an unlikely source.
Plans for a luxurious new stadium slated to open in summer 2012 created a unique opportunity to auction off the historic Lambert Field bleachers to interested nearby high schools. School officials spread word of the auction locally but underestimated the overwhelming interest.
"We actually had several inquiries from area high schools interested in the bleachers, so we expected a big number but we never anticipated anything that big," said Cory Palm, a Web Media Specialist at Purdue.
The initial bidding opened at $7,000 and (working in minimum increments of $100) generated 56 total bids, closing with a staggering $25,200 final bid. Purdue's previous highest auction record was set back in 2009, when a #4 Robbie Hummel used basketball jersey commanded a mere $2,760. Wisconsin held the honor of highest previous auction record, bringing in $18,000 for a 2011 VIP Football experience against heated rival Nebraska.
