Zack Whiting Leads Nation in Assists
Jan. 10, 2007 Indianapolis, IN- A 2007 NABC Bob Cousy nominee, Zack Whiting is showing why he was nominated for such a prestigious basketball award. The 6'4 senior point guard is currently leading the country in assists, by a staggering amount. Whiting is currently averaging 12.4 assists per game, nearly 4 assists better than second place Luke Cooper of Alaska-Anchorage, who is averaging 8.6 assists per contest. In fact, Whiting is leading the nation in assists, regardless of Division. Cooper is the next closest assist man in any Division of college basketball. Currently, Whiting is also amongst the country's best in scoring the basketball, connecting on 59.2% of his shot attempts and leading the PacWest conference in scoring at 18.8 points per contest. A mismatch at the point guard position, the senior point guard is corralling 7.6 rebounds per contest. Whiting, already a two-time First Team All-PacWest selection, has amassed 5 triple doubles so far this year, leading Chaminade to a 9-5 record. The season started off with stiff competition in the EA Sports Maui Invitational, but the floor general responded with 14 points and 10 assists against national power UCLA. Chaminade University and their brilliant point guard are back in action on January 11th as they take on Pac West conference foe, BYU Hawaii. Game time is 7:30 PM HT in McCabe Gym. The game can be seen locally in Hawaii on OC16.
