WBB: Chaminade Plays Well Against UH Hilo Despite Losing

Feb. 20, 2008

Honolulu, HI- William Edward Hickson once said, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."The Chaminade Women's basketball team is still in search of their first victory of the season. They played well tonight against UH Hilo despite losing 85 to 70. They have three more games left in the season to conquer that elusive first win of the season.

Tonight was senior night at McCabe Gym and Chaminade bids aloha to Simrin Herrington formally Miss Simrin Cummins, Marian Murphy and Katherine Carlisle. Head Coach Christina Apisa said about tonight's game, "Senior night should always be a memorable time and even though we did not win our game, we fought until the end and brought breast cancer awareness to the community of Chaminade University and that in itself is memorable. These seniors have created lasting friendships that will obviously last when their basketball days are over and I am proud of both their performance and more importantly their character on and off the court."

Chaminade University honored the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer awareness for both basketball games at McCabe Gym. At tonight's game the Chaminade University basketball programs raised $360 for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation. Money was collected at the door and from fans watching both games. All of the $360 dollars collected will be donated to support the Susan G. Komen fight to find cure for breast cancer.

Senior Katherine Carlisle led the way for the seniors with 17 points and 4 boards. She said on tonight's game and the season to date, "It's been a tough ride at Chaminade, but it's been an experience that I have been blessed to have. I am pleased with the decision to have come here to have been part of this new program. Our team continues to play with heart, and tonight was another example of what we can do. We will get that W!"

Senior Simrin Herrington, (Simrin Cummins) scored 15 points and grabbed 9 boards in her final appearance at McCabe Gym. She said, "My experience at Chaminade has been a roller coaster, but I wouldn't change anything. This season hasn't been the best basketball wise but I have met some amazing friends and have had great teammates to play with. Who I know have my back and will be fighting with me to the end. We have so much talent, drive and determination on this team. There isn't any other team I would have chosen to finish my basketball career with! We have three games left and we'll keep fighting for that win, there is no giving up on this team!"

Senior Marian Murphy rounded out this year's senior class with a great game tonight. She scored 9 points, grabbed 3 boards and had 5 assists in her final appearance in McCabe Gym. She said, "The team played well tonight. Our bench stepped it up for us. We were one down a player and they played so hard when they were in. I am a little sad about the result. I think we could have won. I have enjoyed my time here and I have learned a lot. It's tough losing but I have had the pleasure of playing and getting to know a fantastic group of women who I will love forever."

Sophomore point guard Samantha Saito scored a team high 24 points, she also added 4 assists and 4 boards for the Silverswords. Chaminade shot well as a team for the entire game, they shot 74% from the floor.

UH Hilo was led by Sheila Azevedo who scored 19 points and 6 rebounds for the Vulcans.

Chaminade is back in action on Feb 23rd against BYU-Hawaii. Game time is set for 5:30 PM HT in Laie, HI (Cannon Center).
