WSB: CUH Win in Hilo Despite Rainy Conditions

Hilo, HI- Chaminade flew Hilo this past weekend in hopes of playing the University of Hawaii -Hilo Vulcans in four games, however due to rain those four games turned into one. Chaminade won that game by a score of 5 to 4. Chaminade was all set to play four games in Hilo but ended up only playing one due to rainy weather in Hilo, the Silverswords took full advantage of that opportunity and won thanks in large part to stand out freshman pitcher Chelsi Walls. She pitched all seven innings for

Chaminade. With the win she improves her record to 8-13 overall. The rainy sloppy conditions made it hard for the Silverswords to get things going, but when they did they blew it up in big proportion, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th and the game winning run in the bottom of 7th inning,

The best part of this game wasn't that the Silverswords won, but it was how they won. They needed only 6 hits to get the W. Iwalani Yamaguchi got things started in the 6th inning with a single to right field. Erin Keelan came in to pinch run for Yamaguchi and she advanced to second base on a wild pitch from UH Hilo's Amanda May. Keli-Grace Saniatan doubled to center field knocking in Keelan from third and advancing Shaleigh Gacayan to third from first base, who came into pinch run for Valerie De Los Santos who walked in her at bat. Anina Quaranto kept the inning alive with a single to center field scoring Gacayan and Saiantan, she also moved into scoring position herself on a bad throw from the center fielder to the cut off man. Junior Brandi Sasaki followed Quaranto and the plate and blasted a triple to center filed scoring one run and moving herself into scoring position, however she was unable to score. That inning the Silverswords posted 4 runs on 4 hits and were tied with the Vulcans headed into the final inning of play.

Chaminade knew what they had to do to win, hold the Vulcans scoreless in their at bat and score runs in bottom of the seventh to win. The question was weather not they would do what needed to be done to capture the win and the answer to that question is "yes" they would. Chaminade went on to win the game against Hilo thanks in large part to great defense and solid pitching from Chelsi Walls and great hitting when it mattered most. Freshman Chasity Senas singled to center field and moved to second base on a muffed throw from the center fielder. The next batter for Chaminade was Iwalani Yamaguchi, who would reach first base on a poor throw the second basemen, as the ball moved by the first basemen Chasity Senas sprinted home in hopes to score and the end game.

When it was all said and done Chasity Senas did score and Chaminade beat the Vulcans of UH Hilo by a score of 5 to 4. With the win the SIlverswords move to 12-30 overall and 5-16 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Vulcans fall to 9-13-1 and 8-9 in conference. The next game for Chaminade will be played on April 23rd when they take on Hawaii Pacific University, currently the Sea Warriors are 1st in the conference posting a 19-1 record. This is a double header match up for the Silverswords, first pitch is set for 2PM HT in Kaneohe, HI.
