Bucs Split Pair With Owls

Feb. 17, 2008

Game 1 Stats | Game 2 Stats

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Bucs snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-9 win in a wild game two Sunday afternoon at Buc Field after dropping the first game 9-5.

The first game was started yesterday afternoon, with the Owls (4-1) ahead 3-0. They tacked on two more in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 5-1, but that's when the Bucs (1-4) turned their offense on for the rest of the day.

The Bucs started the inning with a single followed by back-to-back doubles, then sophomore third baseman Alvino Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) launched his first homer in a CBU uniform, a two-run shot to center that tied the game at five.

The Owls cashed in on an error in the top of the seventh, however, to win the game. Craig Moffett reached on an error, and the bases were loaded with two walks. With two outs, B.J. Underkofler hit a bases-clearing double to center to win the game for the Owls. CBU drew two walks in the bottom of the inning, but two flyouts ended the game.

In the second game, offenses ruled the day, as each team scored in five different innings. The Owls got it started with a two-run Kyle Christiansen homer in the first, but the Bucs tied it back up in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic) after a run had scored on an error.

The Bucs seemed to blow it open in the second as they batted around. Senior shortstop Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) hit an RBI single to right, then senior second baseman Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) hit a two-run single to left-center. Junior designated hitter Will Britt (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) capped the four-run inning with an RBI single up the middle, giving the Bucs a 6-2 lead.

The Owls cut two runs off the lead in the top of the third when Underkofler hit a long two-run homer to left, his second of the year. Griffy put another run on the board with the third of three straight singles in the inning, driving in junior right fielder Matt Wilder (Seattle, Wash,/O'dea HS), but the Owls tied it in the top of the fourth with three runs on three hits and three walks as they batted around.

Kaminski's first homer of the year put the Bucs back in front in the bottom of the fourth, but Ryan Dickerman homered to center in the top of the fifth to tie the game again. Back-to-back doubles by Foster and Griffy in the fifth put the Bucs ahead for good, and a Britt RBI single scored Griffy to score what proved to be a badly needed insurance run.

Dickerman hit an RBI single for the Owls in the top of the seventh, but he was stranded on second when the game ended.

Sophomore Matt Lewis (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) earned the win for the Bucs as he allowed two runs in 3.2 innings of relief. Griffy went 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI. Foster was 3-for-4 with three runs, while Britt and Kaminski had two hits each.

Britt also went 2-for-3 in the first game, while sophomore Anthony Apro (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine HS) went 3-for-4.

The Bucs will try to make it two in a row Tuesday afternoon as they host LeMoyne-Owen at 2 p.m.
