Final Stats

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Bucs used 16 hits and nine walks to cruise to a 17-6 win over visiting LeMoyne-Owen Tuesday afternoon at Buc Field.

The Bucs (2-4) scored early and often, building a 7-0 lead in the first two innings and extending it to 15-4 in the sixth before ending it with two more in the eighth inning.

The Bucs scored twice in the first inning as Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) walked and Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) singled. With one out, Will Britt (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) singled through the right side to drive in two runs.

The Bucs tacked on five more in the second as they batted around. Matt Wilder (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea HS) started the inning with a homer to left, and four straight Bucs reached with two outs to drive in four more.

Britt doubled and scored in the fourth to give the Bucs a commanding 8-0 lead. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Jason Volpe (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) kept the Magicians offense in check, throwing five no-hit innings as he earned a win in his first decision. The Magicians finally scored in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded after a hit batter and two walks, they scored three runs on an error.

They trimmed the lead to 8-4 an inning later when they scored another run without a hit. Back-to-back walks put runners on first and second, and an error allowed the lead runner to score from second with one out.

The Bucs put it out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, however, as they sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs on three hits, five walks, and an error.

The Magicians broke up the no-hitter in the seventh inning, just two outs from the 10-run-rule being applied, when Brandon Moody reached on an infield single. Two batters later, Kerry White prolonged the game with a homer to right-center.

Anthony Apro (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine HS) ended it with two outs in the eighth when he launched a two-run homer to left.

Shelton went 4-for-5 and scored four runs to pace the Bucs' offense. Foster went 3-for-3, while Britt and Apro had two hits each.

The Bucs will be back in action Wednesday afternoon as they visit Lambuth at 1 p.m. They return home this weekend for a three-game series with Robert Morris College of Springfield, Ill.
