Bucs' Rally Falls Short, 6-5

Final Stats

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Bucs' winning streak ended at seven games as Northwest Missouri State held on for a 6-5 win Friday afternoon.

The Bearcats (7-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three innings, scoring three runs in the second and three more in the third to take a commanding lead.

The Bucs (7-5) scored twice in the bottom of the third. Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) singled to right to start the inning, and Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) doubled him home. Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) singled and eventually came around to score on a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

Bobby Lawrence (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) drew a leadoff walk in the third and scored on a Foster triple, pulling the Bucs within three runs.

The Bucs pulled within a run in the sixth as Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) ripped a two-out, bases-loaded double to right-center, bringing in Griffy and Shelton.

From there, however, Bearcat pitchers Ben Briant, Danny Malone, and Evan Nickell retired the final 10 Bucs to close out the game.

Shelton led the Bucs' offense with a 3-for-5 performance, while Foster and Griffy each went 2-for-4. Freshman Ben Chism (Nesbit, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) pitched well out of the bullpen, blanking the Bearcats over 4.2 innings on five hits and two walks. Matt Lewis (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) followed with two more scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

The Bucs will be back in action Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against Brescia beginning at noon.
