Bucs Salvage Win on Sunday

March 2, 2008

Saturday Game 1Saturday Game 2Sunday

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored in five straight innings as they rolled to a 10-0 win over Brescia Sunday at Buc Field after being swept 9-2 and 8-1 in Saturday's doubleheader.

The Bucs (8-7) struggled offensively through the first three innings Sunday, but Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) ripped a single back up the middle off the glove of the Brescia (2-10) pitcher.  Kaminski followed with a single, and they both came around to score in the inning.

The Bucs began to pull away an inning later as Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) drew a one-out walk and manufactured a run as he stole second and came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches.  Shelton singled, then Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little rock Catholic HS) launched a towering two-run homer to left to give the Bucs a 5-0 lead.

Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) hit a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to stretch the lead to 7-0.  After another run in the seventh, it was Kaminski who ended the game in the eighth with a two-run single.

Kaminski went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI.  Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) also went 3-for-4, while Griffy and Shelton added two hits each.

Pitchers Ryan McCabe (Richmond, Texas/Terry HS), Dave Delugach (Hernando, Miss./Memphis University School), and Matt Lewis (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) combined for a nine-hit shutout, the Bucs' third of the season.

Saturday, the Bucs struggled all day, allowing six unearned runs in a 9-2 loss in the first game and dropping the second game by an 8-1 count.

Brett Hunt hit a three-run homer in the second to lift the Bearcats (2-10) to a 4-0 lead, which proved to be all they would need.  Bobby Lawrence (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) was the lone bright spot offensively for the Bucs as he went 2-for-3 with two runs.

In Saturday's game two, the Bucs jumped ahead first with singles by Escajadillo and Lawrence in the second inning.  Brescia took the lead an inning later as a pair of doubles led to two runs, then a three-run Steve Vasquez homer in the fourth made it 5-1.

Brescia tacked on three more an inning later before John Romo (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) was able to stop the bleeding as he retired eight of the Bearcats' last nine batters.

Weather permitting, the Bucs will visit Williams Baptist Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m.  They return home to host Crichton Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
