No. 10 Statesmen Sweep Bucs

March 21, 2008

Final Stats

MEMPHIS--No. 10 Delta State swept a Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Friday afternoon at Buc Field, winning 10-3 and 9-2.

In the first game, the Statesmen (20-8, 4-1 GSC West) struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning, with a Rickey Noland RBI double followed by a two-run Chris Clark homer.

The Bucs (11-14, 3-2) scored a pair in the fourth as Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) singled and moved up to third on a Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) double. Griffy scored on a wild pitch, and a Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) single plated Shelton to make it a one-run game.

An inning later, Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) singled and scored from first on a throwing error after a Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) single, tying the game.

In the sixth, however, the Statesmen blew it open, batting around as they pushed six runs across. DSU scored another run in the ninth for the final margin.

Griffy and Kaminski had two hits each for the Bucs in the first game.

DSU again scored three runs in the first inning in the second game and never looked back. The Statesmen tacked on two more in the fourth on a two-run Devin Goodwin homer, and they added two more in the sixth to make it 7-0.

The Bucs got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Foster launched a leadoff homer to left-center. After two more DSU runs in the top of the seventh, Bobby Lawrence (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) blasted a two-out solo homer to left for the final margin.

Lawrence and Shelton each went 2-for-3 in game two.

The Bucs and the Statesmen will meet again Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the final game of the three-game GSC West series.
